The capital of Hanoi occupies a bit more than 900km2 and in this urban centre there are 100 lakes dotting the city. There are natural and man-made lakes, each with its own unique history. They are more than just the soul of the City.

When seen from high above, Hoan Kiem Lake appears in the city’s center like a striking blue gem. The long-standing Tortoise Tower in the lake’s center reflects off the lake’s transparent blue water. Along the shore of the lake the willow tree branches sway in the autumn breezes reminiscent of young girls combing their long hair. For those who live away from the homeland for ages, these popular foods are always reminiscent of their native place.

Thanh Tri stuffed pancakes

Being used to eating stuffed pancake in Hanoi, you may find yourself a demanding customer when eating it somewhere else.

If “Com” is considered the most unique speciality of Hanoi, Vong Village can be called the cradle of this food. People who enjoy “Com” are often flooded with a lot of feelings. People commonly welcome a new autumn with falling leaves, sunlight and breeze.

Traditional taste

Visitors to Hanoi have an abundance of mouth-watering menu options to choose from when they stop by any of the capital city’s restaurants. For those looking for a truly authentic and traditional experience, however, there are a few stand-out items not to be missed.

Vermicelli mixes with fish soup

There is a simple meal that Hanoians can enjoy whenever and wherever they want. That is “bun ca”- vermicelli mixes with fish soup.

Watching a school girl eating her bowl of vermicelli on Hang Luoc street, I couldn’t help my greediness so I cancelled my trip around Hanoi just for this dish. There are dozens of different kinds of vermicelli. Some are simple while others are special, which appear all year round. o¬nly vermicelli and sour crab soup cooked with oleaster or fish soup appear in their own season. In the late of March (lunar calendar), oleaster tree is ripe and laden with juicy fruits.

Gastronomy culture on pavement

It costs only VND 7000 and VND 30.000 for a cup of lemon tea and a portion of grilled beef respectively on pavements in Hanoi.

Tra My, a student of the Industrial Arts University and her close friends always regard Nguyen Du street as the stop for their appointments on the pavement. “I like drinking coffee here because I can both enjoy the romantic lake view and talk freely. It’s so pleasant and comfortable here. The price is extremely cheap, about VND 10.000 per person” she said.

West Lake Shrimp Pancake

Visitors who used to go to Hanoi will eagerly seek a chance to enjoy West Lake shrimp fried pancake, a speciality of this place, which can make a great impression. The reason is not only in shrimp pancake itself, but also in the beautiful scene at West Lake.

Café in Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Tucked between a great number of shops on a motorbike-choked streets of Hanoi's Old Quarter, the Cafes have as much a quality of new discovery about it on the 50th visit as on the first one.

Hanoi is a city that takes its coffee seriously, unlike the rest of Asia -- a tea-drinking continent.Vietnam has a cafe culture to rival Italy's. Along with the colonial architecture and the fresh baguettes that are still sold o¬n street corners, coffee is one of Vietnam's most pleasant legacies from its years of the French colonial time.

Nem ran (Spring roll)

Nem ran (called cha gio in the south) is a much-appreciated speciality, although it is very easy to prepare.

Since long ago, nem ran has been a familiar dish on the menu at all households during the New Year’s festivities, at family parties, and at receptions.

La Vong fish

"Cha ca" is a favourite dish of Hanoian. Located in Cha Ca street, Cha ca La Vong ("cha ca" means grilled fish) is the famous restaurant to many Hanoian as well as visitors from all over the world.

The food is supposed to have been created by the Doan family.

Green rice flake cake- Hanoi’s speciality

Hanoi is famous for its speciality green rice flake cakes which are sold in Hang Than street. Hang Than is just among more than 20 culinary streets in Hanoi which has about 70 streets with their first name of Hang.

This 300 metre long street houses more than 30 green rice flake cake shops. The Nguyen Ninh trademark is the oldest and most popular brand for green rice flake cake. The name was established in 1865 by late Tran Thi Luan and adopted it’s current name of Nguyen Ninh in 1928.

Ancient Hanoi recipe wins worldwide fame

A simple fish recipe, created a century ago, is drawing people from all over the world to the Hanoi family home of the creator of the dish.

Now a restaurant, Cha Ca La Vong (La Vong grilled fish) is run by the descendants of the dish’s creator.

Mrs My’s chicken rice soup

Hanoi is famous for delicious and simple dishes. Therefore, Hanoians have a simple pleasure of gastronomy. Chicken rice soup is o ne of the elegant cuisines of Hanoians.

Che Lam

Huong Canh commune about 25 kilometers to the west of Hanoi center consists of three small villages including Huong Canh, Ngoc Canh and Tien Canh.

Only in Bau and Noi hamlets (Tien Canh village) can “Che Lam” (a kind of sweetened porridge) be made the best. It is so sticky, fragrant, tasty, sweet that you will not fed up with it. This sweetened solid porridge is often served with tea.

Dinh Le book street

Dinh Le is the name of a small narrow street of 200 metres in length. Situated at the cross-road of Ngo Quyen, Dinh Le and Dinh Tien Hoang streets in the center of Hanoi, Dinh Le is also called “Book street”.

Ly Quoc Su Street

Located in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi Ly Quoc Su Street starts from the intersection of Hang Bong and Hang Manh Streets and runs south to Nha Tho Street.

Hanoi - Old Streets and Traditional Trades

Hanoi has an old quarter of 36 streets, each being closely attached to a traditional trade that is clearly shown by its name, such as Hang Muoi (salt) Street selling salt, Hang Manh (curtain) Street selling bamboo curtains, Hang Bac (silver) Street selling silver jewellery, etc.

Hang Thiec Street

Hang Thiec Street is a craft street of tinsmiths which has existed for a long time in the Old Quarter. In the past it was in Yen Noi Village, Tien Tuc Commune of Tho Xuong District (present-day Hang Gai Ward of Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi).

Most of the houses in this street are old and have small garrets which make the house look like “overlapping match boxes”. Hang Thiec Street is 136m long, stretching from Thuoc Bac Street to Hang Non Street. It is the place where tinsmiths make different items, such as oil lamps, candle stands, incense burners, tea pots, tea-set trays and tips of conical hats.

After a period of development the craft also turned out other products from sheet metal, hence the street was called Rue des Ferblanties by the French.

The Capital’s Shortest Street

Being only 52 metres long, Hoan Kiem Lake Street is more like an alley connecting Dinh Tien Hoang and Cau Go Streets.

Few people know of Hanoi’s shortest street, that back in the days when the city was actually a collection of villages, Hoan Kiem Lake Street was part of Ta Vong Village, Huu Tuc Ward, Tho Xuong District.

Regardless of its size, the street has contributed to the beauty and soul of Hoan Kiem Lake . Much of the charismatic old architecture has been maintained on this boulevard that was home to some of Hanoi ’s lower middle class residents.

Hoan Kiem Lake Street clearly reflects the culture of soon to be “Thousand-year-old Hanoi ”.

Hang Buom Street

Hang Buom Street.
300m-long Hang Buom Street was located in Ha Khau Ward (present-day Hoan Kiem District) near the junction of the To Lich and Red Rivers. Prior to 1945, the street was known by the French name “Rue des Voiles” but after 1954 its name was changed to Hang Buom Street.

In the past, different kinds of boat sails which were made from homemade canvas or rush were sold on the Street. It has also been the main residential place of the Chinese people since the 17th century.

Due to the favourable geographical condition, people in Ha Khau Ward lived on trades dependent on the water. They produced different kinds of bags, sacks, trellis-matting from rattan and rush which were transported by boats to other places.
