Traditional handicrafts are being developed in trade villages. These villages have cultural value while increasing earnings for rural dwellers.

Rural Vietnam is home to 90% of the nation’s population. Typically, growth and economic development in rural areas is lower than in urban centres. Trade villages include shops and factories that produce handicrafts. 

Hanoi to pay 70% for craft villages’ trademarks

The Hanoi City government agreed to cover 70 per cent of costs for building and developing the trademarks of the city’s surrounding handicraft villages, said the municipal People’s Committee deputy chairman, Phi Thai Binh.

He said the city government had issued Decision No 22, which aimed to preserve and develop handicraft villages.

New census shows slowing population growth

The results of a government census reveal that Vietnam ’s population rose by nearly 12 percent in the past ten years, making it the third most-populous ASEAN nation and the 13th most densely-populated in the world.

The 2009 General Housing and Population census found the total population was 85,789,573 as counted at 0.00 hours on April 1, 2009, a rise of 9.47 million from 1999. These results were made public at a teleconference in Hanoi on Aug. 13, which was chaired by Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung.

Folk painting is o ne of the special cultural features of Vietnam. Since the ancient time, there have been a lot of painting villages, such as Dong Ho village (Bac Ninh province), Hang Trong village (Hanoi), Kim Hoang village (Ha Tay province), Nam Hoanh village (Nghe An province), Sinh village (Hue city), and other villages in the south and mountainous areas.

Dong Ho is located on the southern side of the Duong river (40km to the east of Hanoi) is one of the villages that preserves ancient cultural relics of Kinh Bac area (Red river delta, north of Vietnam).

Dong Ho painting is printed by hand on the surface of wooden plate. Each printing colour has its own engraved board. The black one is printed last. Thanks to this way, paintings are made in bulk and do not require sophisticated techniques.
